Bangor

a great place for your language learning adventure

Bangor is a welcoming seaside town (now officially a city!) of 65,000 people. For many years it was a local holiday hot spot until international travel beckoned people overseas, but with renewed appreciation of its location, investment in arts and culture, and focus on small businesses, it is enjoying rising prominence as a seaside destination again. While studying with us in Bangor, you’ll be able to enjoy our vibrant arts and live music scene, history and nature . The best thing in our opinion is that it still retains the “village” feel. As the only English language academy in Bangor, the locals will be keen to engage with you, and curious about your culture. For a city vibe, Belfast is only 30mins away on the train where lively nightlife and world class attractions await.

What to see and do in Bangor:

As an adult English language learner on our immersion course, you won’t have a lot of free time, but here’s a list of interesting things to see and do if you need a break from study (but not a break from English of course!):

  • Ward Park:
    • It’s just a short walk to this traditional town centre park, where you can see ponds, ducks, and habitats for exotic birds
  • Bangor Marina:
    • Begin your exploration of Bangor at the marina. It is only 2 mins’ walk from our academy. Take in the sea views, coastal breezes, and the charm of yachts.
    • Enjoy a spot of people-watching or book reading from one of the benches. Northern Irish people are friendly and will most likely strike up a conversation with you.
  • Main Street Shopping:
    • Take a walk up Main Street and High Street for independent shops and galleries. Our charity shops (secondhand items) are famous, and the perfect place to pick up a bargain.
  • North Down Coastal Path:
    • Embark on a scenic walk from Bangor to Holywood along the North Down Coastal Path.
    • Explore forest parks, and sea-swimming spots.
    • In the summer months, you may encounter Guillemots, affectionately known as Bangor penguins.
  • Bangor Castle and Castle Park:
    • Home to North Down Museum and Victorian Walled Garden. Learn about Bangor’s Heritage at this free museum and finish with a visit to one of our favourite cafes: Coffee Cure.
  • Food and Drink in Bangor:
    • All food is included in our immersion courses, but as a treat when out and about you might want to try some award-winning ice-cream from one of the various parlours. “Pooh Bear” flavour is a locals’ favourite.
    • In our atmospheric pubs you can enjoy a perfect pint of Guinness, or sample one of our locally brewed IPAs.
    • Bangor has a wealth of independent coffee shops for your caffeine fix. Be sure to try a savoury sausage roll, or for something a little sweeter – try a traybake, or “scone” with jam and fresh cream.
  • Sports:
    • Running and walking: the coastal path is perfect for this! Detour into one of the forests for a little trail running and forest bathing. For a social experience, we recommend participating in “Park Run”, a welcoming community that attracts many runners, joggers and walkers every Saturday (9.30am in Ward Park).
    • “Wednesday Warriors”: Join Sonia and other locals for this fun, free, and informal exercise session before lessons every Wednesday. The emphasis is on fun, social exercise where the participants come up with a different program each week.
    • Cycling: We offer bicycle rental (road bike or mountain bike) and Gavin is happy to recommend his favourite routes.
    • lf golf is your thing, you’ll be spoilt for choice. There are several golf clubs close to the academy. This is the country of Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke afterall!
    • We have mini-golf and a pirate themed adventure golf course close by, for those looking for a more informal game.
    • Sea-swimming is becoming a popular past-time in the area, and Sonia is always keen for a cold-water dip. Don’t be surprised if she tries to convince you to go with her.
    • Tennis: there is a lawn club 5 mins’ walk from the house where one-to-one coaching and group sessions are available. Also gravel courts available in town.
    • Indoor Sports Centres and Gyms: Bangor Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Complex has a cutting-edge gym, group exercise classes, and an Olympic sized-swimming pool (15 mins’ walk). There are also other top class gyms in Bangor.
    • Martial Arts: a school only 7 mins’ walk from the academy.
    • Yoga: A well-equipped studio with a variety of classes including aerial yoga, close to the house.
    • Snooker and pool: a friendly hall is less than 10 mins’ walk away.
    • Watersports: Bangor Marina is home to SUPHub NI. There are also fantastic kayaking and water adventures to be had on Strangford Lough.
    • Fishing: Sea angling trips can be organised with the Bangor Boat company. You’ll also see people fishing from Eisenhower pier, and from rocks just off the coastal path.
    • Karting: Race on one of Ireland’s longest indoor karting circuits at the Eddie Irvine Centre.
    • For sports and hobbies not mentioned here, just ask and we’ll be happy to check out the situation for you.

Weather

The UK climate is mild and despite its bad reputation, we are fortunate to have few extremes of weather. However, it is best to be prepared for changeable weather. The temperature can range from 3-22 degrees across the seasons. We can have gorgeous dry sunny weather in April, and perhaps heavy rain in August, but in general May to September are the best months for fairer weather. Study trips continue whatever the weather, and learning English outside will stimulate your senses and your language learning brain! Be sensible and check the weather here online before you travel. Pack layers and a raincoat, you may even need sunscreen!
